In the midst of the current "radio safe" commercial bands and the not-so-commercial "real book" club residents, there lies a breath of fresh air by the name of, DARK HALL.
Characterized by the retrospective borrowing of the old school and establishing precedent for the new school, the blend is a modern day fusion of sound and style. What separates this east San Francisco bay area quartet from the rest of the genre, is the ease at which they assimilate the best and diverse aspects of many types of music into a finely tuned, explosive musical movement.
DARK HALL’s sound progresses along their distinctive originality. The goal is to keep it along the lines of creating musical fun with no barriers of style, musical categories, and definitely, no one particular type of audience. Realizing that most people have open minds and a broad range of listening tastes, the band will always strive for a different and interesting way to entertain.
The band was formed by bassist, Steve DiGiorgio, sax/flute player, Flamp Sorvari, and drummer, Chris Dugan. It started out to be a studio project that began in April of ‘92 as a trio. To expand on the sonic possibilities, they decided to add Eric Cutler on guitar. With the structure of a quartet intact, the recording of the first demo was completed in the summer of ‘94. The five song offering was entitled Solace, and was recorded mostly at Bay Records in Berkeley CA. This demo was modestly distributed, however, it was favorably accepted. The material received positive feedback from the mail order listeners, local distribution, several underground music fan-zines and a handful of local appearances.
In 1995, DARK HALL pulled its collective intensity together to form what would become the new material (released as an untitled demo). Featuring the talents of newly acquired guitarist, Ken Schultz, the new songs are loaded with the emotion, exploration and drive unique to the group on all of the previously composed material.
In late ‘96, with the use of new sounds being more evident, the band hopes to reach a much more broad range of listeners with the new recording. Feeling confident that the latest offering will give them the key to fulfill their dreams, the distribution of the demo, and the frequency of live appearances will be stretched farther into the musical realm.
